A neighbor of ours hadn’t been mowing his grass for a while, and a couple of weeks ago we saw a Rent-A-Center-type van in the driveway. The Wife and I were confused, but then it all became clear to us when we talked to some other neighbors (gotta love the information systems of the suburbs). The house was being foreclosed, and they had moved out. Not only that, but the son of the family had been suspended from school. The neighborhood is coming together to keep their house in decent shape in advance of the sherriff’s sale this next week. I know that I’m getting older because as soon as I heard all of this, I had nothing but sympathy for the entire family. They appparently have a second house (which they had been using as a rental) to live in — but I count my blessings.
Both daughters have had big changes to their appearance recently. Daughter #1 got her first set of glasses. D#1 not only can see the board (every five minutes or so, she pulls her glasses down her nose, looks around and says “Wow” — she can’t believe that things aren’t supposed to be blurry), but she has those Transitions lenses, so she has way cooler glasses than her parents. I think that this may help her concentration in class. She’s also going through the wrench that a number of her classmates are not going to be there next year. One is going to a local magnet school to facilitate her skating career, another’s parents are moving. She’s scared that she’s going to be moving as well, the idea of which we’ve tried to un-convince her. We’re here for the duration.
D#2 got her formerly shoulder-length hair cut into a Jennifer Aniston bob. She looks very cute, but very different, but she loves it, and she loves the attention. It makes her round, cherubic face even rounder, as well as making her hair easier to comb. Her class is taking a field trip to visit her teacher at home. She has a newborn, and so they’re going to have lunch with her. She’s enjoying the final days of being able to pick what she wears to school, as next year she’ll be in a uniform like her sister.
Both girls are eagerly awaiting the opening of the community pool this weekend, and it looks as though we’ll have some good weather. Our area will be the center of the sports world this weekend, both with the announcement of the 2012 Super Bowl, and the Indianapolis 500. We haven’t seen this much action since the primaries a couple of weeks ago. Which leads me to a question for all those readers who don’t live in the Indianapolis area: Has your opinion of Indianapolis changed in the past 10 years? Remember, 1998 was Peyton Manning’s rookie season and the Colts were 3-13. The Pacers were at the height of their glory (they reached the NBA finals in the 1998-9 season). Does anyone associate anything non-sports related with Indianapolis?

“God didn’t make little green apples, and it don’t rain in Indianapolis in the summertime.”
And…that’s it for non-sports-related free-association. Sorry.

Indianapolis: one of the only cities in the U.S. to get the Lord of the Rings Exhibit and the only place in the world I’ve ever been at a table where we were served pink Shirley Temples and blue Roy Rogers by the pitcherful!
