As of today, the records of the basketball teams from my three alma maters (I don’t know the correctly-formed Latin plural for that phrase) are 10-12, 13-7, and 20-4. That is a 65% winning percentage overall, and they are 70% in conference games. The big discrepancy comes from Kenyon College’s non-conference games where they went 2-7.As an Indiana University alumnus, I obviously have an opinion about what Kelvin Sampson and his two assistant coaches are alleged to have done. But since I received a graduate degree from the school and didn’t go there for the four forming years of college, I don’t feel as close to the program as I might otherwise. The allegations are disturbing, if true, especially since Sampson knew he was under a microscope both from his time at Oklahoma and from the IU community, which expects a squeaky-clean program. Needless to say, that didn’t prevent them from riding Mike Davis out of town on a rail, even though he produced results similar to those of Bob Knight’s final years. As I Tweeted, those of us who follow the program (golly, but I hate the term “Hoosier Nation”) are thanking our stars for the Clemens/McNamee testimony, because it’s certainly keeping our scandal off of the front page. But even if all of the stuff is true, do I really care?
